A Guide to the Holiday Windows of NYC

On nov.17, Macy's unveiled its famous holiday window display at its flagship store located in Herald Square. The event was celebrated with a performance by the cast of the broadway play, sister act, as well as an appearance by actress whoopi goldberg, who, along with two makeawish foundation participants, flipped a giant switch to expose the windows.A gigantic, cheering crowd braved the cold to witness the event.

The display is titled,"Makeawish,"To honor and support the foundation.

"We are doing such a wonderful thing with the makeawish foundation,"Olszewski said. "Our macy's celebrities have made 14 ornaments to support the foundation. "

Alist ornament makers include calvin klein, martha stewart, jessica simpson, donald trump and ralph lauren, among many others.10 percent of the $9.99 purchase price of each ornament goes toward the charity.

The creative director explained that his team went with the theme of wishes to create a,"Wonderful, abstract sort of world that tells the story of what happens to wishes and dreams. "

"It's a magical journey for you to explore,"Olszewski added.

The displays feature a wall of 3d screens that do not require the viewer to wear glasses to experience their effects.Beginning at the first window, visitors watch a magical character launched from a ship heading to the north star to decorate the tree of wishes.

The entire display is outfitted with funky silver wheels and marionettes, with a vintage, yet techno feel.Through the progression of the windows, the wishes and dreams are converted into ornaments.Actual wishes from children from the makeawish foundation are featured boarding the"Ship of wishes. "

Viewers of window number six are invited to take home a"Gift"When looking at the windowsyou can virtually make your own ornament via three touch stations. Then, your unique design can be"Pinged"To your cell phone from the display, allowing you to upload your personal creation to facebook.

"It is very old world meets new world,"Olszewski said, with regard to the mix of 3d, as well as an abundance of puppetry in the display cases.

The windows will be on display through jan.2.

As for Ralph Lauren Outlet the plan for next year's windows?

"I can't tell you that,"A smiling olszewski said to the crowd. "But i'm already working on it. "

Macy's is not the only department store with deckedout windows.Several others across the city have come up with their own creative concoctions to sit inside the glass cases showcased on new york city's bustling streets.

Barney's, for example, enlisted the help of eccentric pop superstar lady gagathe store's windows feature her interpretation of santa's workshop. In addition to adding her flair on the outside, gaga has created many products, including cookies, ornaments and even presson nails, to be sold at barney's, with a portion of the proceeds going to her born this way foundation, which promotes equality.Highlights include a boudoirsupposed to be gaga'smade entirely out of hair and the"Gagamachine"A modern, sleek, motorcycleesque bike, with a rainbow of colors and a model of lady gaga's body hidden within the structure.

Saks fifth avenue, which had a"Bubble"Theme last year, is revised to include a 3d light show featuring snowflakes, as well.Notable elements include a guccidesigned fiat, and a series of original dress designs by alexander mcqueen and stella mccartney, among other designer brands. The 3d Louis Vuitton Bags uk show is projected onto the outer wall of the store, seeming to change the building's structure with innovative illusions.

Bloomingdale's, which is known for its famous shopping bags, utilizes the trademark in its holiday windows this year. The bags are in giant form; Some of them are partially open and spinning to reveal their contents. As you're looking at the display, cameras will take your picture and they will be uploaded to bloomingdale's facebook pagebe sure to smile and look for yourself later!

Which one takes the cake?I would have to say macy's.Although all of the stores' displays are spectacular, macy's was able to expertly weave several themes together:Innovative technology, which embraces a rapidly growing trend in our culturethree dimensional technology, a look back into its roots(Puppets were used in the past), support of a wonderful charity, and the use of celebrities to uniquely contribute to the exhibit. All of that, plus an opportunity to take something away from the displays, is pretty impressive.
