I first met Jack, and always met Jack, at Bubba's Burgers in the new Kukui'ula Shopping Center at Poipu Beach on Kauai. As we enjoyed tropical burgers at a small table on the deck with our two small grandchildren, Jack came around the corner of the building toward us. He cleaned off a nearby table and then walked over to our table as he pulled something out of his pocket. He asked the kids if they wanted a kiss (to their embarrassment) and then handed each of them a Hershey's Kiss. That was our first introduction to this quiet, unassuming old guy who looked to be in his 80s. He was skinny with wrinkled, discolored skin from age and years in the sun.It was 2009, and Bubba's Burgers was one of the few businesses open. The Great Recession had flexed its muscle before the shopping center could be completed. As frequent visitors to the Garden Island, we were concerned the partially completed center could turn into a vacant eye-sore and were happy to see a couple of businesses opening.On our next trip to Kauai, Jack was still there when we stopped by for another burger. He offered us a Bubba's two dollar bill for our next purchase. I thought, "They must have given this old guy a job to help him out." But no, I learned that he wasn't a paid employee. This was his therapy being useful and finding meaning to life as an old guy.When I asked his name he only gave me his first, Jack. Although he didn't talk much about himself, like most grandparents he took pride in telling about the successes of his grandchildren. Last fall, he told us about his granddaughter's career and that she was planning to get married on Kauai over the holidays. By asking questions over time, I was able to learn that Jack was from Southern California, where he previously had a string of successful businesses and was well-connected socially. He lives on Kauai because his son lives here. He works at Bubba's because he has connections with the owners and wants to see them succeed.Each time we returned to Kauai, I made a point to see if Jack was still there. From the first time we met, his health didn't look good, and over time it appeared to slowly deteriorate. In recent years I began to worry that he might not be there the next time I came, and it was with relief that I would find him when I arrived on the island. "Every time I come back and you are still here, it makes my day," I would tell him.When we arrived on Kauai this time, we dropped our things at the condo and went straight down to Kukui'ula for the Wednesday evening Farmers Market. After buying a few bananas and a couple of papayas, I wandered down to Bubba's. I wondered how Jack was doing, particularly since my dad is near the end of his struggle with brain cancer.Page 2 of 2 - Jack wasn't there.When our granddaughter joined us on the following Monday of Memorial Day weekend, she wanted to go to Kukui'ula to do some holiday girl shopping. Again, I wandered over to Bubba's. Still no Jack.One last Tropical Burger before returning home after two weeks and my last chance to ask about "the old guy who hangs around." Do I really want to know? The island girl behind the counter responds, "Yes, Jack. He passed on about three months ago, but it went well for him." I told her I was sorry to hear about his passing and thanked her for sharing. "I work here five nights a week, and every night I have a couple of people ask about him," she offered. "It is especially hard on the kids."I must be a kid.The above story was sent to me by my favorite nephew, Marvin. With his permission, I have plagiarized it. Marvin has been smart and successful in his investments and enjoys frequent vacations in his condo in Hawaii. He especially delighted in sharing his paradise with his beloved father, my brother, whom we all thought was Superman: bullet proof.A few years ago Marvin lost his mother. Then, last August, his indestructible dad, and my beloved brother, succumbed to brain cancer. Yes, we are mortal.
